Alternatively, you can buy a “frame only” kit that you attach to a wall or install in a closet or cabinet that you build. You can get one of these for about $800.
Advantages of a Complete Murphy Wall Bed Kit:
Not only do these folding wall beds make efficient use of space, but they also are really easy to pull down and lift up. This particular murphy bed comes with a dual-piston mechanism, which makes raising the mattress feel almost effortless.
Plus, the fold-down bed includes a sturdy metal support leg that you just flip down when you open the bed. Then, you rotate the support leg back when you close the bed, so it stays hidden behind the cabinet door.
Not to mention, you don’t *really* have to make the bed. Simply remove the pillows and fold up the bed with the sheets and bedding intact. (Talk about saving time!)
Consequently, you can use this set-up as a daily sleeper without feeling like it requires more effort than a traditional bed frame.
Note: The large bed frame attaches securely to the wall behind it with the included anchoring kit. Therefore, You don’t have to worry about the cabinet toppling down during set up (or any time for that matter).

Ideally, you want to have clearance of 30-36″ around the sides of the bed when open for “ease-of-movement”. However, some smaller spaces may not be able to accommodate this.

This DIY murphy bed kit doesn’t come with a mattress, so you get to choose the type you like best: coil spring, memory foam, hybrid mattresses, etc.. The frame fits most standard size queen mattresses, so your options aren’t limited. (Plus, it’s easier to shop for sheets and bedding too!)

The hidden bed has a shorter design (like a typical cabinet), and the mattress folds out rather than down.
